Checklist3.2
Your first 30, 60, and 90 days
Theory
Three systems unlock most others in the US: your Social Security number (SSN), an insured bank account, and a credit history. Credit takes time, and regulators point to the same drivers: paying on time matters most, and using only a small share of your limit helps. So start the clock early and keep it simple.
Method
- Days 1–30: apply for your SSN with the Social Security Administration if you're eligible and don't have one yet. Open a checking account at an FDIC-insured bank or an insured credit union.
- Days 1–30: store your SSN in one secure place. Share it only when truly required (employer, bank, tax agency).
- Days 30–60: ask your bank about a starter or secured credit card (your deposit becomes your limit). Put one small recurring bill on it.
- Days 30–60: pay the statement in full and on time. Turn on autopay for at least the minimum as a safety net.
- Days 60–90: get your NC driver license or ID (next guide), and check your free credit reports once you have a few months of history.
