Method3.3
NC driver license, ID, and REAL ID
Theory
NCDMV says that within 60 days of establishing a permanent residence in North Carolina, if you plan to drive, you must get an NC driver license and title and register your vehicles. If you hold a valid license from another US state, the written and road tests may be waived; without one, you take the tests. New drivers take knowledge, road sign, vision, and road tests.
Method
- Gather documents for REAL ID: one proof of identity and date of birth, one document with your full name and full SSN, two documents showing your current NC address, and proof of liability insurance if you'll drive. Non-US citizens also bring proof of lawful presence.
- Study the NC Driver Handbook for the knowledge and sign tests.
- Driver license offices take walk-ins until they reach capacity. Appointments are optional and can be booked up to seven days ahead.
- Check the NCDMV page for current wait times and capacity before you go.
