NC tax basics for newcomers

Theory

North Carolina has a flat individual income tax. NCDOR lists the rate for tax year 2026 as 3.99%. You file a federal return with the IRS and, if required, a state return with NCDOR. Your first year can be a part-year, so read the residency rules.

Method

  1. Check that your employer is withholding NC tax (Form NC-4) as well as federal tax.
  2. Keep every tax document in one folder as it arrives.
  3. Read the federal basics on our Tax page, then the NCDOR individual income tax pages.
  4. For anything specific to your situation, ask a licensed tax professional or a free IRS-certified program.

General information, not tax advice. Rules change; always check NCDOR and the IRS.
