Method3.4

Renting in the Triangle

Theory

Without a US credit history, renting is mostly about showing you're reliable in other ways. North Carolina law also sets clear rules on security deposits: no more than two weeks' rent for week-to-week rentals, one and a half months' rent for month-to-month, and two months' rent for longer terms. After you move out, the landlord must refund the deposit or send an itemized accounting within 30 days.

Method

  1. Pick an area by commute first: map the drive or bus to work and school (see the next guide).
  2. Prepare a renter packet: ID, proof of income or a job offer letter, bank statements, and references.
  3. If you have no US credit, ask the landlord how they handle newcomers before you pay any application fee.
  4. Read the whole lease. Note the deposit amount and check it against the state limits.
  5. At move-in, photograph every room with dates. Keep copies of everything you sign.
