Kids and school: enrolling in WCPSS, DPS, or CHCCS

Theory

Public school is assigned by your home address, and each district has its own enrollment steps. North Carolina law requires a certificate of immunization on the first day of school; if it isn't ready, families have 30 calendar days from the first day of attendance to get the required shots. All three districts screen children who speak another language at home and offer English learner services.

Method

  1. Find your assigned school with your district's address lookup (WCPSS, DPS, or CHCCS).
  2. Follow your district's enrollment page for the documents it asks for, such as proof of address and your child's records.
  3. Bring your child's immunization record, translated if needed. Ask a doctor or the county health department about any missing shots.
  4. WCPSS: if another language is spoken at home, the district gives an English screener; its Center for International Enrollment helps with records and grade placement.
  5. DPS: the ESL Registration Center helps families who need language support, and a Newcomer Academy supports students in their first year of US school.
  6. CHCCS: multilingual learners are identified through a home language survey and screening, with ESL support and a newcomer program.
